Aging Rock Musicians
09 November 2004 13:23 pop cultureHave you ever noticed how some rock musicians age well and others not so much?
I happened to think about this while watching The Gilmore Girls. (American readers, please remember we are a season or two behind you here) Anyway, one of Rory’s friends, Lane, has a band and they were looking for a new guitarist. Along comes this older guy (they are 20… he is about 35) who is a little heavier with long blonde hair. He is good, so they hire him and he becomes a recurring character named Gil.
I kept thinking that he seemed familiar but wasn’t sure why. Then a few days later, while watching the opening credits I saw the name “Sebastian Bach.” For those of you who are not late 80s hair metal fans, Sebastian Bach was the lead singer of Skid Row. Suddenly the realization dawned on me: Gil is Sebastian Bach!
I really liked Skid Row in their heyday and thought Sebastian Bach was pretty good-looking, but I barely recognized him. In addition to aging 12 years, he has probably cleaned up: I have noticed that once they go through rehab and aren’t in the public eye anymore a lot of rock musicians age like that. Last time I saw Vince Neil, not to mention Axl Rose, I noticed a similar transformation. Ah, it is a bit sad to see the hands of time whittling away at the music gods of my youth…
