Weekend Update
07 November 2004 17:04 germanyAccording to the weather forecast, this next week looks to be rainy and cold. Yesterday was a semi-decent day: it was sunny when I woke up and a just a little bit nippy. Since I had seen the forecast for the coming week, I implored A. to come outside with me to enjoy the day.
I decided that we should travel to Starnberg, a “suburb” southwest of Munich that has a lake. I figured we could walk around town a little bit and then along the lake. He wasn’t too excited about going, but since we have been discussing ways to “spend time together” (one of my suggestions is that we get out of the house more often together) he consented. By the time we were half way up to the train station, I was already wishing I had worn a heavier jacket. It had begun to cloud over and A. grumbled he should have worn his rain coat.
About half way into town we changed our plans and decided to just go to our favorite restaurant and eat lunch and then hang out in Munich. However, since it was approaching the end of lunchtime, I thought I should check the lunch hours of the restaurant. It turned out they didn’t serve lunch on Saturday. So we decided to go ahead and go the Starnberg after all.
Once we got there, we walked around a bit; mostly looking for a restaurant that was still open, but also enjoying the town too. Though my ears were cold, all the walking kept me from getting too cold and the rain held off. Eventually, we found a place to eat and afterwards strolled along the lake. The day kept getting cloudier and darker, but I thought I might take some pictures of the swans in the lake anyway. However, I soon realized that though I had put my camera in my purse, I had neglected to toss in the extra batteries. As soon as I flipped on my camera, of course I got this message: “Please change the battery pack.” So much for pictures of the swans… no big loss though, if you have seen one swan you have seen them all, right?
About a half an hour after we started our lake stroll, we decided we were cold and boarded the train back for Munich. Instead of going home, however, A. suggested we go into downtown and check out the book stores. He had mentioned that I had read there was a new Hugendubel (the local bookstore chain) here that sold only English books. I confirmed, but told him that I couldn’t remember the address, only the subway stop. We decided to go ahead and go… after all, it shouldn’t be that hard to find, right?
We got to Odeonsplatz and walked around the area for a good hour with no luck. We finally stumbled into “Fünfe Höfe” and for some reason that rung a bell. We found a Hugendubel, but it was just another German branch. I asked the lady where the English one was and she told me, complete with directions in Bavarian. I understood “Salvatorplatz, left, straight,” and “on the corner.” However, when we decided to actually look it up on the map, I discovered for some reason I wasn’t carrying my Munich map! After asking three people, two of whom were not from Munich, we found the place. We spent the next two hours browsing around and came home with a sack full of English books.
It sprinkled on us on our walk home from the train station and was colder than I would have liked, but all in all we had a nice day about town.

Starnberg is a lovely town. My friends and I went there quiet a few times to hang out at the lake there.
And an all English Hgendubel?! Ah, that would be like entering heaven, a very expensive heaven.
Sigh.
