Bugs Bunny in the Headlights
11 January 2005 1 CommentTonight, as we were coming back from the gym, we were stopped at a T-intersection and as I looked across into the field, I saw a pair of glowing eyes. Not only am I an animal lover, but I grew up in rural America, so I can spot an animal’s eye shine in a ditch from quite far away. In fact, I have seen deer and raccoon eyes a such a distance that I was able to slow down and avoid serving up a fresh dish of road kill. If truth be told, in the entire time I have been driving (about 15 years) I have only hit one animal with my car; a pheasant that quite literally dropped out of the sky.
As I was pointing out the eyes to A., it dawned on me what exactly I was looking at. At first I thought it was a rabbit. However, when I thought about it for a second I realized the bunny was far too large and had way too perky ears to be your run-of-the-mill rabbit. I thought I was looking into the eyes of Bugs Bunny. This bunny was huge! He was at least as big as my 15 pound cat. He wasn’t a rabbit… he was a hare! Apparently hares are native to Germany, but I am not sure if I have ever seen one except in a zoo.
Anyway, there he was sitting in the field looking like he wanted to cross the road. He advanced a little way, but when he noticed the headlights coming down the road, he paused. I was hoping he wouldn’t run out into the road, because softie that I am I know I would have made A. stop and either a.) take him to the vet if he was unlucky or b.) bury him if he was really unlucky. However, his lucky rabbit’s feet must have been working for all involved because he stayed where he was. After the cars had passed and we turned to continue on our way home, I noticed the hare had turned around and was heading back into the field. I guess he must have decided that the grass wasn’t really that much greener on the other side of the road after all.
