Lounging Around

My mother is a fantastic seamstress and even though she taught me the basics when I was a kid, sewing was something that I just never really developed a taste for. However, since I have become a domestic goddess, things that I would never have thought about doing in the past suddenly seem appealing, and sewing is one of those things. Back in August, we went to visit my in-laws and when I told my MIL that I was interested in sewing but didn’t have a sewing machine, she went out and bought me one.
When I got my new machine I spent about a month making pillows, learning a little bit about quilting, and planning on sewing myself all sorts of new clothes. I started off with a pair of “lounge pants,” mostly because I can always use comfy pants to wear around the house and because I already had a pattern for them. After some initial difficulties, they turned out fine.

After I did my first pair of lounge pants, I went and looked at clothing patterns but didn’t really find anything that peaked my interest that was at my ability level (complete novice). My initial sewing enthusiasm had begun to wane, although I did keep my eyes open for patterns and fabric in case it came back.
One day a couple of months ago, I was browsing through the “rest” material and found some fabric that I liked and that was just enough for another pair of “lounge pants.” It was cheap, so I bought it and when I got home I just stuck it in my fabric stash. I didn’t really forget about it, I just hadn’t had any ambition to sew it up into another pair of pants. However, while I had my sewing machine out the other day, I decided that I should finally make myself that second pair of “lounge pants.”
I made the second pair from the same pattern as the first and did everything by the pattern, except that I added a pocket. I did this because a pocket for my keys is one thing that I wish the first pair of pants had. I wasn’t exactly sure how to make an inside pocket from scratch, so I decided a back pocket would work just fine. I simply cut a square from my left over fabric, hemmed it, and sewed in on the back. I’ll admit it looks a little goofy, but these are just pants to wear around the house, so, hey! What do I care?

Don’t you just love the LOUD fabric I chose for both pair?!

I have a loud pair of lounge pants too
Mine have black animal prints (zebra, tiger, spotted, etc.) on top of almost neon blue, green and purple. Talk about loud and annoying! Haha! Just the way I like it!

Well, you are braver than I! I have often thought about sewing and finding a good sewing machine, but just haven’t had the courage to go and do it! Great job on the pants as well!

I laugh every time I see that picture of the pants sewn together the wrong way. That is the funniest thing!
I just wanted to say that sewing in a side-seam pocket is not hard at all. Try it next time you make a pair of these. Just make sure you give it plenty of material — it is easy to make the pocket too small for your hand!
