Baby Sampler Blahs
16 February 2005
Today I got back into my stitching rotation and worked for 2 ½ hours on “Brooke’s Baby’s Sampler.” The pattern that I choose for the baby sampler is an Ellen Maurer-Stroh design from her “Babies in Animal Costumes” series. Normally I love her patterns, but I am not overly impressed with this one. The baby in the bear costume is very cute, but I have come to really dislike the flowers at the bottom.
I am probably about ¾ done with it, but right now I am on the flowers at the bottom and they are going so slow and it seems like there is very little visible progress. On top of that, I realized I messed up somewhere and am off not just a few stitches, but two whole rows! Amazingly, it isn’t really that noticeable and I just can not bring myself to go back and figure out where the mistake is. However, these latest developments have only contributed to my displeasure with this piece.
To begin with, I haven’t cared for the fabric that I am stitching it on (25 count Lugana) since the very first rotation. I think the fabric feels coarse and the crosses are so big that I have had to use three strands of floss. I really dislike stitching with three strands because I can never get them to lie smoothly and they seem to tangle up so easily. I am not sure if it is the fault of the three strands or because there are lots of color changes, but I never found a good rhythm and the back of this piece is quite messy. Originally, once I was finished I was going to send it to Brooke unframed so that she could choose something to match the baby’s room, but now I am leaning in the direction of making it into a wall hanging so that I can cover up my messy back.
I think I can get it finished within one more 15 hour rotation and though I am not crazy about it, honestly it doesn’t really look too bad: I am just not really enjoying stitching it that much. However, I am sure Brooke will like it all the same.
