My American Duty
23 February 2005

I suppose as an American living in Germany it is my duty today to blog about Bush’s visit to Germany.

I don’t live near Mainz (where Bush and Shröder met), so I can’t give you a perspective concerning what the city was like. If you want to know about that, drop by Jingle Lady’s blog. However, according to the news, Mainz was like a ghost town.

Still, I did watch the press conference this afternoon: After all, the lead up to it interrupted my soap opera and there wasn’t anything else on.

Now, since I really hate it when they dub over someone while that someone is speaking a language I understand, I did the following: While Schröder was speaking, I watched the German news station N24. While Bush was speaking, I watched CNN International. Luckily the channels on my TV are 28 (N24) and 27 (CNN) so I didn’t have to do too much flipping. It was a good thing I chose to do so too: CNN had “technical” problems while Schröder was speaking and their audience didn’t get to hear much of what Schröder had to say. Afterwards I found it interesting to compare the commentary between the N24 anchors and the CNN anchors.

Though I could add some scathing comments about how I perceived the president (*cough* a terrible public speaker and an idiot *cough* - Actually, I thought of him as such LONG before he ever became president. I lived in Texas when he was governor!) I prefer for this blog not to become political. Nonetheless, my take on the whole thing is this: They pretty much agreed to disagree… on Iraq, Iran, China, NATO and the Kyoto Protocol. The End.
