A Burst of Fresh Air
03 May 2005 21:29 that's life!Today we finally got our balcony door fixed! Now I can finally air out the living room. You didn’t think my adventure with the balcony door ended the day that I got stranded on the balcony, now did you? Actually, the whole balcony door thing turned into quite the ordeal.
First, let me remind you that I got stranded on the balcony over a month ago. The day that the door guy came and confirmed that our door was broken he also told us he would be out of town the next week. So, to start off with it would have been two weeks before the door was fixed.
About two weeks later, on a Friday around 4:00 pm, the guy came back. Our door is an older model and we found out from him that they don’t make the exact piece for our door anymore, so he had to improvise. However, the piece that he brought with him to fix the door didn’t fit! Consequently, he told us he would have to try and find another piece. But since it was Friday and by that time almost 5:00, he didn’t think he would get the piece that day, and… he was going to be out of town again the next week!
During the entire time spring was becoming more and more evident. There were cool, fresh breezes blowing and the living room kept warming up. I wanted so badly to be able to air out the room, play in my flower boxes, sit in my lawn chair with the spring sun on my face, or simply hang the laundry outside to dry, but I couldn’t. I never realized how much time I spent on the balcony in the springtime until I wasn’t able to be out there.
Finally, today the door guy returned and this time he was armed with three different pieces! He ended up having to try all three pieces and it wasn’t until he got to the last one that he found one that fit. He said he wasn’t 100% happy with the way that piece fit, but since the proper piece is no longer available it would have to do. After he finished the door, he was nice enough to check and oil all of the other windows (which are in good shape).
So, three visits and a month later I was finally able to open my windows tonight… just in time for the first spring thunderstorm!
