bird Let It Snow
15 November 2005

Margaret Sherry's Snowman; Progress as of 15.11.05 - Click for a larger image! Here is a sample of what I have been working on the past few days: Margaret Sherry’s “Snowman.”

I am having great fun stitching him and I really love the fabric that came in this kit. According to the Heritage Stitchcraft website, this mint-green fabric is 28 count “vintage” Juliana, but I think that it looks hand-dyed because it has a really nice marbled look to it. Either way, it is really neat fabric.

However, I am a little confused about it: According to Zweigart, Juliana is made of cotton, but when I look at it, the fabric strands are uneven like linen. I must admit that I am no expert when it comes to fabrics, so I am asking those of you out there with a little more fabric knowledge than me: Is it possible that the fabric could be uneven like linen but still be cotton?

I estimate that I am about 50% finished with “Snowman,” therefore if he continues to scream at me I could quite possibly have a happy dance by the end of the week… and according to the weather forecast it might be just in time for our first snow of the season!

bird Twenty Questions

  4. Say a word that sums up your mood. Neutral
  5. Do you remember your dreams? Only if I don’t sleep well.
  6. Name something from your dream last night? I slept well last night, so I don’t remember what I dreamt.

  8. Today you are wearing… the same thing I wore yesterday. (Seriously, how dirty do you think I get sitting around the house cross stitching all day?)
  9. What’s in your pockets? Lint
  10. Did you sing in the shower today? I never sing in the shower
  11. What’s the last song you heard? “Learning to Fly” by Pink Floyd

P.S. Confidential to my best friend in the world: Happy 31st Birthday! :)

bird Just This Once
14 November 2005

If you have ever wondered how a childless couple would function as a parental unit, take a moment and look at how they handle the discipline of their pets. From this simple exercise, I have learned that A. and I would be complete failures as parents and so it is better for all involved if we stay childless.

Take, if you will, the recent behavior of Mouse. As I have mentioned before, Mouse is an attitude with a tail and lately she has been very demanding about being in the kitchen. Now in our house, the kitchen has a door and this door is closed 98% of the time because I do not want the cats in the kitchen. I could say there are a multitude of reasons why the cats don’t need to be in the kitchen (and there are), but the truth is I am lazy and don’t always clean up the kitchen after dinner.

In the past, Mouse didn’t care all that much about the kitchen. Sure, she might wander in there now and again when I was in there to see what I was doing… especially if I was making something that would result in her getting a treat, but over all, she wasn’t really interested in it. However, lately she has been fascinated with this room where the humans do mysterious things involving pleasant aromas.

I suppose it is technically my fault: After all, over the summer I left the door open a little more often so that the kitchen could air out and she was free to roam in and out as she pleased. I suppose that now that the door is closed again she doesn’t understand why she can’t go in there to investigate things once a day.

Now instead of wandering in and out of the kitchen on a whim, she sits outside the closed kitchen door waiting for me to walk by so that she can let out a meow demanding that I open the door at once… and when I don’t, she paws at it. When I am in the kitchen preparing dinner without her, she cries incessantly and occasionally jumps at the door reminding me that I have forgotten someone out in the lonely hallway.

I have become pretty successful at ignoring her cries and keeping her out of the kitchen, but as soon as A. walks through the door she races in right behind him. I tell him that I don’t want her in the kitchen while we are eating and he gives me that husband-nod that tells me he has heard me but hasn’t listened to a word I have said. So we sit and I attempt to eat my dinner while Mouse paws me (never A.) trying to make her case for the table scraps that I don’t give her.

Finally, A. started to get fed up with her behavior in the kitchen. (When she realized I wasn’t going to give her any scraps, she started pawing at him for them.) A. declared that Mouse was being a pain in the ass and from now on she wouldn’t be allowed in the kitchen while we were eating… until she started pitifully meowing outside the door during dinner.

I was the disciplinarian. I said she couldn’t come in. I told A. that if we let her come in when she started crying outside the door that she would never learn that she wasn’t wanted in the kitchen. I said we should just let her cry until she was hoarse.

And as I said all this, A. got up, opened the door, and said, “Oh, well… just this once.”

bird Paws Off Fob
13 November 2005

Paws Off Scissor Fob - Click for a larger image! I have wanted to make a scissor fob since I don’t know when, so last night when I got inspired to do so a little after midnight I got all of my materials ready and started stitching right after breakfast this morning.

The pattern that I chose for my scissor fob is Stitchy Kitty’s freebie “Spring Kitty Paw.” Since I knew I was going to make a scissor fob I knew the end result should be small and at 36×34, this piece fit the bill perfectly. However, I wanted to make sure that this fob was really small because I wasn’t sure how I would like something hanging off of my scissors. Therefore, I decided to go one step further in smallness and stitch on a piece of 22 count Hardanger linen over one.

Because this is officially the first time that I have stitched over one, I thought it might be good to use a piece of fabric with a slightly larger count so that I could the feel of stitching over one. Stitching over one was an interesting learning experience for me and since this pattern was pretty easy, I think it made good practice.

Here is what I learned about stitching over one:

First: I wasn’t really sure if I should use one or two strands when stitching over one, so I went ahead and used two. On 22 count I think 2 strands are OK, but if I ever stitch over one on anything with a smaller count I think that only one strand will be better.

Second: One has be careful not to pull the floss too tight when stitching over one because if the floss is pulled too tight it will slide underneath the individual fabric strands and make things confusing.

Third: Stitching over one is hard on the eyes (because the stitches are so small) and the back (because I had to lean over to see where I was stitching).

Fourth: Stitching over one is a fun change from stitching over two and I will definitely have to try it again! :)
After the stitching over one was finished, I then went about making the actual scissor fob.

While I was stitching the kitty paw, the phrase “Keep your paws off my scissors” kept running around in my head, so I decided to shorten it to “Paws Off” and use it to stitch a back piece for the fob. I then put the paw piece and the wording piece together using a whipped backstitch edge. I stuffed the fob with batting, added a 5 Euro cent piece for weight, attached some pre-made white cording to the top, and tied it onto my scissors.

I am quite please with the way it turned out, but in all honesty I don’t know how long it will actually stay on my scissors because the kitties have already decided that instead of a scissor fob, I actually made them a new kitty toy. And, according to them, I just attached this wonderful new toy to my scissors so that I could torture them by telling them to keep their little paws off it!

bird A Birthday Present Revealed
12 November 2005

Scorpio Flanged Pillow - Click for a larger image! Today Dawn got her birthday exchange piece in the mail, so now I can finally show a picture of it!

I stitched her one of the cats from Margaret Sherry’s “Cats of the Zodiac” collection. Obviously since Dawn is a Scorpio, that is the cat that I did for her! I stitched it on part of the piece of 27 count Linda that I hand-dyed sometime back in July and made it into a flanged pillow.

I never really found any decent, free flanged pillow instructions out on the web, so using pictures of ones that I saw online I made up my own method for putting the pillow together and it worked really well. I loved the way this pillow turned out so much that if I hadn’t made it specifically for Dawn I would have had a hard time sending it on its way! :) I also included some Munich postcards and some German chocolate in her birthday package.

So, even though her birthday isn’t officially until Tuesday, why don’t you hop on over to her blog sometime between now and then and wish her a happy birthday? ;)
