Souvenir Shopping
4 January 2006
I spent today in search of those perfect German souvenirs for my immediate family and friends. I tried the regular stores first, but it wasn’t until I ended up in a little shop filled with tourists and overflowing with shot glasses, ash trays, and key chains that I managed to find a little something for everyone on my list.
In the time that I have lived here in Germany, I have sent my family and friends a few things, but today was the first day that I actually set foot in one of those tourist traps shops. It was much like any other souvenir shop you will find anywhere else in the world: The only real difference is that instead of (insert city or country here) souvenirs it was selling Germany/Bavaria/Munich-themed souvenirs and as a non-tourist I felt funny trying to decide which shot glass represented the Frauenkirche better.
After some deliberation I settled on a selection of trinkets with a variety of mostly Munich landmarks and upon consulting my list, was pleased to see that I had managed to complete my shopping in under an hour and for less than 100 Euros.
Oh, I know that if you asked them, my family and friends would say that it isn’t necessary for me to bring them gifts from Germany and that my visit home is enough of a gift in and of itself. But I know better.
I know that deep down inside everyone is expecting some sort of little trinket and honestly, I am quite OK with that. After all, if the places were exchanged and my sister was coming home after three and a half years abroad I would definitely be expecting something from her!
