Incoherent Scribblings

Do you have an organizational system for your patterns? If so, how do you organize them? If not, have you considered organizing them?

As you can probably imagine, as a librarian I am big on organizing things. However when it comes to my cross stitch patterns, I have only recently started to seriously organize them.

Over the last year and a half, I have bought a lot of patterns (And no not just when I was in the US either!) and they outgrew the basket that I had them in. I was also tired of having to unpack the basket every time I wanted to look through my patterns, so I finally decided to put some of my organizational skills to work.

As of now, my organizational system looks something like this: My patterns are divided into freebies, leaflets, booklets, kits, and magazines. The freebies are in three ring binders and are more or less alphabetized by designer. The magazines, booklets, and leaflets are in open magazine boxes and are displayed on a bookshelf. The leaflets are also more or less alphabetized by designer, but are also arranged depending on the size and shape of the leaflet (Mirabilias and MLIs come in odd-sized packages, don’t they?) and the kits remain in the stitching basket that also contains my fabric. And finally, I am in the process of putting everything into a spreadsheet (alphabetized by designer of course!) so I know what the heck I even have!
