Some Computer Skills Required

I applied for a job as “Youth Counselor.” It is through a local government program in the area and all the ad said was:

“This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, with travel required [---]. College background preferred with some computer skills required.”

I think I meet those requirements, so I applied. I have an interview Monday. The ad was so brief that I don’t even know exactly what this person will do, but I have a suspicion that it will be working with “at-risk” teens. I don’t know what the pay will be, but I won’t take less than $10 an hour. If it is a government program like I think it is, I should have insurance and retirement, but I need to make sure. And I think I could start May 10 (no earlier).

I wish I could start tomorrow, but with Step-dad out of commission, I feel like I shouldn’t start for at least a couple of weeks. Not to mention that if I get this position, I will quit the Sheriff’s Office and would like to give them two weeks’ notice. I know that I can continue to live here as long as I want, so I am not in too big of hurry to move out, though I would want to do it sooner rather than later.

I still want to work as a librarian, but I just haven’t been too keen on any of the jobs advertised lately. If this is something that interests me, I wouldn’t be opposed to getting an advanced degree and making a change of career if necessary. In fact, unlike the job in the bookstore that I didn’t care about, I plan to take this interview seriously and look at it as a career opportunity rather than a filler for a “real” job.

I can’t believe I am seriously considering staying here longer. I can’t/don’t/won’t believe it is for good, but at least long-term temporarily. It’s rather ironic I think… Staying is what The New Guy dreamed of, but because of his clingy ways, he won’t get to enjoy it if I do.

I really like the changes you’ve made and I’m really glad you haven’t quit blogging, I have really enjoyed reading your posts. I understand and respect that some of your posts will be locked. Just be encouraged that I love hearing what you have to say; I think your ideas and thoughts on things are interesting. I find you motivating and thought-provoking. Good luck w/ the interview! I have worked w/ “at-risk” teens before and it can be very exciting and rewarding as well as stressful. I think it is something you might really enjoy giving a chance. Good luck and keep us posted!

Did you see that ALA is actually trying to convince Congress there is a shortage of librarians? Talk about a bridge to nowhere. They just need more LIS students to fill their classrooms. I blogged about it. Your new site looks very nice and is easy to navigate.
