Although I adopted the blondelibrarian persona to merge two of the most important aspects of my life together, I have always been slightly amused at the combination of “blonde” and “librarian” because for most people the idea is sort of an oxymoron. How can a blonde be a librarian? Librarians are smart, intelligent, and boring, right? Then again, how can a librarian be a blonde? Blondes are dumb, ditzy, and sexy, right?

Being blonde is not always easy. Laugh if you want, but blondes suffer from discrimination. It is the type of discrimination that is subtle and usually hidden in the form of jokes, but it’s there. Many people assume that just because I am blonde I am ditzy, stupid, or both. It is something that I have dealt with for years and as a result I have spent much of my life working to prove that I am not either of these things.

Some people have suggested that since it is easy to change one’s hair color, a simple way that I could end this discrimination is to just not be blonde. However, even though I want to be seen as intelligent and grounded, the simple fact is that overall I like being blonde.

But everyone needs a change now and again, so for the next 28 shampoos you may refer to me as the strawberry blondelibrarian. :)
