Sensitive
10 November 2008

I went to the dentist a couple of weeks before I left Germany (mind you this was over two years ago now) because my teeth were so sensitive that eating cold foods had become torture.

The good news was that upon an examination the dentist told me that I was cavity-free.

The bad news was that it was my wisdom teeth that were causing the sensitivity and the dentist recommended that I have them taken out.

The really bad news was that I was going to be leaving Germany (and my dental insurance) within a couple of weeks and my soon-to-be ex-husband didn’t want to deal with the paperwork hassle, so I didn’t get them out.

Amazingly, after I had been back in the United States about a month my teeth miraculously stopped being sensitive (Mom suggested that perhaps my sensitive teeth were related to the stress I was under at the time. Stress? What stress?! ) and since I didn’t have any dental insurance in my near future I let my wisdom teeth stay where they were.

However, I also knew it would only be a matter of time before they started bugging me again, so when I got my current job I made sure to sign up for the dental plan.

I went for over a year and a half without so much as a wince, but at the beginning of the summer my teeth started being sensitive again so I started thinking about making a dental appointment. At first my teeth were not super sensitive so even though I kept thinking that I really should make an appointment, I also kept putting it off. Finally the sensitivity got bad enough that I knew I had no choice but to make that appointment.

And of course, since I am with a DMO that is where things got interesting.

First of all, I had to go to a dentist that is out of town because there are no dentists in the DMO in West Texas Town that are accepting new patients. Then I had to contact the insurance company and have them fax the dentist office that I had chosen so that I would be on the dentist office’s list of new patients. Then I got to make an appointment.

The appointment was, of course, merely for a check-up and x-rays, but I did at least get a referral to an oral surgeon. However, the oral surgeon can’t meet with me until December 9 and that is just for a consultation. So at the moment my back molars are sensitive to hot, cold, and pressure and I still have no idea if and/or when I will ever get my stupid wisdom teeth out.

Oh well, it is a DMO after all. Really, what else did I expect for $7.00 a month?
