bird A Special Announcement
6 April 2005

OK, here it is… the announcement I alluded to yesterday: (drum roll please)

Last week I was contacted by the good folks over at Expatica.com who had been reading my blog. Recently they decided that an expat blog column would be a good addition to their website that is chock-full of news and information for expats living in France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands. In the email they sent me, they asked me if I would be their “German” expat blogger!

I was extremely flattered. After all, their “French” expat blogger is none other than Petite Anglaise who, as many of my readers know, is a wonderfully talented writer. After many back and forth emails clarifying all the details, I accepted.

That’s why tonight I am announcing that my expat blog over at the German section of Expatica.com is now officially up and running! I will be posting some of my German adventures over there once or twice a week now, so do come over and check us out.

And as a matter of fact, today’s entry, “A Trip to the Post Office,” is brought to you by Expatica.com.

One thing about living in a foreign country that never ceases to amaze me is how an otherwise mundane task has the surprising ability to turn into an outright adventure. Take, for example, an ordinary trip to the post office.

A while back I had a package that needed to be sent via certified mail. I had sent many packages to the U.S. in the past, but had never sent something that required a signature upon arrival.

Of course, I didn’t have any packaging at home that would work, so I decided that I would just take the recipient’s address and the materials I needed with me to the post office. There I would purchase the envelopes, address the package, and after making sure a signature would be required upon arrival, send my little package off to Switzerland.

Before I left the house I verified what I thought might be useful words and phrases in my German-English dictionary; “versichern” – to insure, “die Unterschrift” – signature, and “das Einschreiben” – certified/registered mail. Though “das Einschreiben” might have been the most useful word of the day, unfortunately it was also a new word for me. Therefore once I actually got to the post office it went straight out of my head.

As I walked to the post office, I rehearsed the conversation with the postman in my head.

Ich möchte dieser Brief versichern, bitte. Ja, der Brief braucht eine Unterschrift. Vielen Dank.

I knew that the chances were slim that I would actually use those words with the correct grammar, I seldom do, but it doesn’t stop me from practicing anyway.

I purchased my padded envelopes without a fuss and sat down to stuff and address my package. In my perfect penmanship, I began writing out the recipient’s address. However, as I came to the last line, my pen hovered above the envelope: My package needed to go to Switzerland!

In German, Switzerland is a country that requires an article (der, die, or das) and for the life of me, I couldn’t remember if Switzerland was masculine, feminine, or neutral. As a matter of fact, I wasn’t even sure if I was required to put the article on the envelope. I agonized over the matter for a few minutes until I finally decided to take the easy way out: I wrote “Switzerland” in English and hoped for the best.

I took my package to the desk and though the postman didn’t question the fact that “Switzerland” was in English, he didn’t seem to comprehend what I wanted when I indicated that the package should be “versichert.” When I finally told him that it needed “eine Unterschrift” he understood and filled out a form for my little package. In turn I got a receipt with a tracking number and the recipient’s name and address on it.

I then went home and for the next week anxiously awaited an email from the addressee telling me that the package had arrived at its intended destination but was not released from the post office’s custody without the requisite signature.

When I learned that the package had arrived safe and sound, I was elated: not only because the package had arrived, but because I could add another success story to my list of everyday tasks that I can accomplish in Germany. However, I’m still not sure if I need to add “die” to Schweiz when addressing an envelope.

bird A Better World Through Blogging
16 March 2005

Shortly after I started blogging last January, I met a fellow expatriate blogger here in Munich. I found her completely by chance because I just thought the name of her site sounded cool, “Raspberry World,” when I stumbled upon it via Blogger’s recently updated list. I had no idea she was in Munich when I clicked on that link the first time, but when I discovered she was, I sent her an email. We went out for “coffee” (OK, hot chocolate) a few days later and hit it off. From then on we met quite often and did fun things together until her husband got transferred back to the States in August.

Well, Susie is back in town this week! And tomorrow we are going to get together and have lunch and cruise town. I am so excited to see her! Shortly before she left, I discovered that she had cross stitched in the past and I encouraged her to start again. Together we are participating in some online cross stitching activities and tomorrow we will be visiting the stitching shops here, along with some standard shopping.

It never ceases to amaze me that I have “met” so many people through blogging. Sure, I have technically only met a few in person, but I feel like when and/or if I ever meet some of my regular reads we will have plenty to talk about and very little of those “awkward silences.”

For example, recently Vivi and Tracey set up The Great International Secret Blog Exchange. I didn’t participate in this round because I was already participating in something similar through a cross stitch board, but if they do a second round I definitely want to get involved.

And then, once again thanks to Vivi, I just learned about a proposed European English Language Book Exchange. I am very excited about this because though I am a librarian, I am not a book collector. There aren’t a lot of good opportunities to get rid of used books here and so if someone else would like something that I no longer want, I am happy to send it on to them. And of course, the major benefit is that I get something too! I really hope someone has Dean Koontz’s Whispers. I have wanted to read it for ages, but for some reason always forget when I order from amazon.de.

Since I am a housewife and have no job outside the home, sometimes life in a foreign country can get a little lonely. But through blogging I have discovered that I am NOT alone and that always makes things easier. Yes, I think it is true: It is without doubt “A Better World Through Blogging.”

bird Slip Me Some Skin!

It might appear that the blog has been quite the last few days. Well, I will grant you that I haven’t posted as such, but believe me, behind the scenes it has been very busy!

It all started over the weekend when I decided that I was ready for a new spring theme. After I developed and uploaded it I realized that I still very much liked my old theme.

Now while I enjoy the writing aspect of blogging, another one of my hobbies is web design and I like to use my blog to experiment with new issues that I come across. When I wrote my New Year’s Resolutions one of them was to “learn .php.” When I thought about it I decided I didn’t want to learn .php as such so much as I wanted to learn to “skin” my site. I have designed lots of skins during the short (14 months) life of my blog and up until now I usually just replace the old one with the new. I have an archived copy of a couple of those designs on my hard disk, but I would like to be able to switch between my skins at random. Enter the skinning!

And that is what I have been doing the last few days. The first change you may or may not notice is that all of my files now end in .php instead of .html. If you have linked to one of my entries anywhere, please update your link. (The old .html files are still there for now, but I can’t guarantee I won’t delete them if I need more disk space.)

Then following this tutorial, I uploaded three skins “Whoopsy Daisy!”, the new spring theme… it should be the default; “Pink Plain Jane”, a simple theme modified from the Movable Type Template “Sakura”; and “Blonde Bubbles,” the skin you have been seeing for the past few months.

Everything seemed to go well creating my PHP switcher and inserting the code into my index templates that tracks cookies (that’s how it remembers which skin you choose), but when I tested it, the skins weren’t switching.

I cursed, I reread the instructions, I cursed some more, I looked at some other tutorials and tried some of those ideas, I cursed some more, and then finally (many, many hours later) I found this suggestion on some obscure bulletin board and it worked! If it wouldn’t have been so late (approaching 2 am) I would have ran outside and screamed! I was SO fucking happy!

I made the final tweaks this morning and now my site is should be skinnable! I think I finally have the kinks worked out, but would love it if my readers would choose one the skins in the left-hand right-hand column (Sorry about the Blonde Moment… for some reason I always get the two mixed up!) and leave me a comment or drop me a gmail if you come across any bugs.

bird Happy Dance!
2 February 2005

** Insert “Ren and Stimpy” theme song here **

Happy, Happy! Joy, Joy! Oh, it is a happy day!

I just got a call from the computer doctor and my computer is fixed! :) They are mailing it out to me today and I should have it back in a day or two. YIPEE!

Of course, the operating system and all the software will have to be reinstalled, but that’s no big deal. And, lucky me, I made a backup right before it crashed, so I still even have all my data!

bird Happy Blogday!
22 January 2005

It was one year ago today that I sat down at my computer and typed http://blogger.com into my browser window for the first time. I wasn’t sure if I would like the whole blogging thing, but figured I might as well give it a try. It is true that my blog has moved homes a couple of times since then and it took me a couple of months to find my voice, but I am still here and though I go through a dry patch now and then, I enjoy blogging more than ever!

Due to my hard drive crash, I wasn’t able to highlight my favorite posts throughout the week as I promised. However, today I am making up for it by giving you the whole list. So, without further ado, I present to you… (drumroll, please)

“Culture Shock and the blondelibrarian:” One Year On

A Wine Drinker in Beer Country

It is hard living in a country where beer is the national beverage when you don’t like it. Here I explain why. (originally posted 27.03.04)

A Bra Story

Like most women, all of my adult life I have dreaded bra shopping. After many weeks of casual browsing, my first bra shopping experience in Germany didn’t turn out nearly as bad as I feared. (originally posted 20.04.04)

A Keyboard Story

The hard drive crash wasn’t the first adventure I’ve had with my laptop. When we bought it June I faced a major dilemma: An International US (is that an oxymoron?) keyboard or a German one? Find out which one I chose here. (originally posted 28.06.04)

A Melon Story

Memories of the time I received a 30 pound watermelon as a gift from my “Little Chinese Guy.” (originally posted 05.08.04)

Die Deutsche “Recht”schreibung

One word or two? A scharfes “S” or not? Just when I thought I had learned enough German to get by, I find out some reputable German publishers want to abandon the spelling reform! (originally posted 08.08.04)

Flying Kitties

Thinking about moving abroad and bringing your pets? After you read about the most stressful time in my life, perhaps you will think twice. (originally posted 10.08.04)

Lily White vs. Golden Brown

In which I attempt to come to terms with my naturally fair skin while also making a case for the tanning bed. (originally posted 10.09.04)

Confessions of a Coke Addict

Hello, my name is Renée and I am addicted to coke. It may or may not be what you think… (originally posted 15.09.04)

Pork Chops and Side Burns

One word, two plural endings. Getting them mixed up at the butcher can sure get some odd looks thrown your way! (originally posted 27.10.04)

The Panty Thief

In which I retell three bizarre instances that resulted in the same thing: missing underwear! (originally posted 21.12.04)

Thanks to all of my loyal readers this past year… I hope you stick around for the second installment! :)
