Whip Stitch Pin Cushion Tutorial

Supplies:

  • 2 stitched pieces of approximately equal size (one for the front, one for the back)
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Embroidery Floss or Perle Cotton
  • Polyfil

Directions:

Step 2 - Click for a larger image! 1.) Count out five, ten, fifteen, or twenty stitches (over two) out from the widest and narrowest points of the design. This will be your dimensions to backstitch your border.

2.) Backstitch a border around the design in the dimensions noted above. (I have used both one and two strands to stitch the border: It is your preference.)

3.) Wash and iron your pieces. (Optional)

Step 4 - Click for a larger image! 4.) Measure ½ inch (about 1 ½ cm) around your stitched pieces and trim away excess fabric.

Step 5 - Click for a larger image! 5.) Finger press fabric down against backstitched border.
Step 6 - Click for a larger image! 6.) Putting the back and front together, whip stitch about ¾ of the way around the piece, mitering the corners as you go.

7.) Stuff with Polyfil. (I included a coin as well to give the pin cushion a little weight.)

Step 8 - Click for a larger image! 8.) Finish whip stitching the cushion.

9.) You are finished! :)
